FAQ – The Hiking Coach App
About the app
What is The Hiking Coach app? The Hiking Coach is a training app built only for hikers. It gives you structured strength programs and workouts that make you stronger, fitter and more resilient in the mountains, so you can climb higher, hike further and descend with confidence.
Who's behind it? The Hiking Coach was created by Laurie Crayston. Every program is built around what hiking actually asks of your body: long climbs, steep descents, uneven ground and hours on your feet.
Who is it for?
Hikers training for a big trip, challenge or summit
Hillwalkers who want to enjoy their hikes more and feel better afterwards
Anyone who wants to feel strong and capable in the mountains
How is it different from a normal gym app? Our app is built specifically for performing in the mountains. Every session is chosen for one reason: to make you a better hiker.
Programs and workouts
I'm a beginner. Is it right for me? Yes, several programs are designed specifically for beginners and progression is built in, so you can progress through several programs as you advance. Every exercise has a video demo, so you'll always know what to do.
What equipment do I need? Each program tells you what you'll need before you start. Some require no equipment at all while others require a full gym set up. There is something for all equipment options.
How much time does it take each week? Depending on the program this can range from just 1.5 hours to up to 16 hours per week for our more advanced programming.
Can I do it alongside my normal hiking? Yes. The programs are designed to sit alongside your time on the hill, not replace it.
Can I do more than one program? While we don’t recommend doing more than one program at once and recommend finishing one program before beginning another, you will have access to our full programming library from the get go and can change program at any time.
How do I track my progress? You can log every session in the app, so you can see your training build week by week.
Getting started
Which phones does it work on? The Hiking Coach app is available for iPhone (App Store) and Android (Google Play).
How do I sign up? Sign up via the link on our programming pages.
Is there a free trial? At the moment we don’t offer a free trail but we do offer a 30 day money back guarantee if you are not satisfied with the app for any reason.
Safety
Should I check with a doctor before starting? If you have an injury, a medical condition, or haven't exercised for a while, speak to your GP or a physiotherapist before starting any new training program. Please read the "Before you start" advice in the app before your first session.
Is this a rehab or physiotherapy program? No. Our programs are general strength and conditioning for hikers. They are not medical advice and are not a substitute for treatment from a qualified healthcare professional. If you have pain or an injury, please get it assessed by a professional.
What if something hurts during a session? Stop the exercise. Training can feel challenging, but it shouldn't cause sharp or worsening pain. If pain continues, get advice from a qualified healthcare professional before carrying on.
Is there an age limit? The app is for adults aged 18 and over.
